Hello, you won't get altitude sickness in Big Almaty Lake or Shymbulak as their altitude is relative low. You do not need to climb Almaty Lake, just drive to the Lake, step out of the car and you can see it from the top without having to even walk far. There are no facilities in Big Almaty Lake if you get altitude sickness. I am not sure if Shymbulak has a medical center. I do not know if there are any tours that take oxygen mask as precaution. You can't drive yourself to Shymbaluk as it is not permitted; you either take a special taxi located at Medeo or you need to get a cable car. I prefer the taxi and it is a set fee of about 3,000 tenge one way.
Yeah, I think so. I have visited there in mid-April and it was beautiful - still some snow around, but plenty of warm days and mild weather. Hope this helps
I've heard tourists have come into trouble trying to get down to the lake? Is it still possible to hike down to the water? Is it worth the day trip from Almaty? thanks

I have been there 3 months ago. It was prohibited to enter to that place but guards just led us go :) You will not have an opportunity to swim as it's a water reservoir. You can take pictures and to have a look on the mountains. I wouldn't say that it's a one day activity. Anyway, if you have any questions, please feel free. I am Talgat, you can call me Tony :) I will be welcome to help our guests. Just msg me on whassup, +77017873266. Send your question I will try to answer :)
I would like to know any cheaper way to go to Big Almaty Lake? The day tour offered by travel agency is very expansive.
