5 out of 5, we came to visit to show our kids their roots. Also, enjoyed adventuring, hiking, eating, learning, & making memories together. A travel company assisted us with guided tour, transportati…Full review by amigarciacortez7

I think we were there at the end of dry season and things were a little bit crispy, but it was still absolutely beautiful. There is so much to explore, you could spend a whole week here. The highligh…Full review by cb102180

One of the most unreal experiences traveling in Nicaragua. So many things to do in one place, the local people are the friendliest you can find and the visitors come from all over the world. Ideal to…Full review by Moises G
Four people staying in Granada want to go to Ometepe for a day trip. Possible? Is it best to hire a guide or can we get to the ferry and make our way around the island on our own?

You can easily take a taxi from Granada to Rivas where you catch the Ferry (about $1.50/pp). I would also second the suggestion to stay on the island for at least a couple days. I would also suggest going away from Moyagalpa and heading to some of the other places on the island (Santa Cruz, Balgue, Santo Domingo). There are taxis on the island that can take you around. And yes, if you go this route best if you speak/understand Spanish and understand the cord conversion.
Hey, Just the info I needed. I am renting a car for the week. Arrive Managua on a Sunday at 1:25. Given customs, pick up car etc. How far should we drive or try to get to me at early ferry for Ometepe on Monday? Or is it possible to do on Sunday. I think we would miss last ferry. Anyway, any recs on just staying in managua or trying to get to a closer town would be great. Have looked at several places to stay on island but not decided yet. Then probably 2 nights here, 1 night beach, 1 night Leon and back out. Thanks for the ferry tips and any other tips in advance:)

There are several ferries that go to Ometepe, we caught one at 11:00 am in San Jose and the ride takes about an hr. If you rent the car in Managua you could take it in the ferry with you, but you don’t really need a car in Ometepe, you could rent an ATV or bike on the Island, we hired a tour guide that drove us around for about $80/day (we were a group of 8), I would suggest spending the night in Managua and taking an early ferry to the Island on Monday, everything closes super early in Ometepe around 7:30 pm so you wouldn’t want to get there late, keep in mind the sun sets around 5:30-6:00pm. There are some good places in Managua where you could stay and have dinner.
Where should we visit to see the best wildlife, especially monkeys?

Hey! We saw a bunch of monkeys during the morning in front of a vegetarian organic restaurant. It was 2km maybe from the entrance to Ojo de Agua. The people of the restaurant give them fruit remains and the go down the trees to eat them. I hardly recommend Charco Verde, I loved the butterfly place. Seeing the sunset in punta Jesus María was amazing too. Good trip!
My wife and I fly in to Nicaragua on the evening of May 3rd - we have the 4th-9th to see 3 target places 1 Ometepe Island: goal 4 days - best place to stay on beach? Best place to rent quad cycle? 2.Granada: 2 days and take in Live Volcano tour on one of those days - can you recommend tour company to take us from hotel in Granada to see live volcano - we want a guided tour and can be with a group for that excursion. What is the best itinerary in your opinon and best way to get to each without renting a car (I drive enough as it is!).

Hi! I'm traveling to Nicaragua next week. I plan on visiting Ometepe but i'm staying in San Juan Del Sur and taking a shared shuttle to the ferry. That is also an option for you. Alternatively, look into Xalli Ometepe Beach Hotel or Hotel Villa Paraiso are both on the beach. There's also Totoco Eco-Lodge on Ometepe Island ( on the slopes of Maderas Volcano), not sure about renting ATVs. The Tribal Hotel in Granada is stunning!!!! As for volcano tours, look into Tierra Tours or Julio Tours. Transportation around Nicaragua can be done by taxi or shared shuttle. Adelante, Bigfoot Hostel, offer shared shuttles to your desired destination.

Most ferries dock in Moyogalpa; although one, El Rey de Cocibolca, lands in San Jose. Search for a schedule online, "Ometepe Ferry Schedules 2017", to determine which ferry you will be on and where it lands. From Moyogalpa, Punta Jesus Maria is 4 km to the south. From San Jose, it is 8 km to the west. Car: with a car, drive up from the ferry to the main ring road (T-intersection). In Moyogalpa, turn right and travel for 4 km to the turn off on the right for the Punta; from San Jose, turn left & travel 8 km to the turn-off on the left. Taxi: there are more (and cheaper) taxi options from Moyo. Any taxi will take you to the Punta for $4-10. Bicycles, motorcycles: there are many rental operations in Moyo. Walk up from the ferry to find a suitable option. Be sure to carefully go over the rental for damage before you leave. Check out reviews and avoid those with a bad reputation. Follow the driving directions for the car. Bus: this is the way that we use (we live part-time on Ometepe). In Moyo, walk up the dock to the waiting bus. Be sure to get on the correct bus (usually the one in better condition) - if you say that you are going to the Punta, they will let you know whether you are on the correct bus. You may have to stand because the busses get crowded, but it is only a short ride. The fare will be about $1. In San Jose, the bus may come down to meet the ferry. Otherwise, walk up to the ring road and wait for the bus traveling to the left. The fare will be a couple of dollars more if you get on at the ferry. The bus conductor will ask you your destination and charge you the appropriate fare. The Punta is 1 km down a sandy, shady road from the turn-off.
