As the sun goes down, the winter storm over metro Atlanta and North Georgia takes an ugly turn. The wind has gotten so strong, that it broke a FOX 5 Atlanta umbrella during live news coverage with reporter Aungelique Proctor.

ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is currently under a ground stop, meaning planes cannot fly in our out of the airport. According to flight tracker Flight Aware, more than 1,000 flights at the Atlanta airport have been canceled on Friday. Another 500 flights have been delayed.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for many areas of Georgia. Here's a look at the forecast and what agencies are doing.

ATLANTA — North Georgia experienced a winter wonderland on Friday as several inches of snow blanketed the area. Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan says snow will continue in the mountains and occasionally mix with sleet through late Friday.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for almost all of north Georgia, including all of metro Atlanta, from 5 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. Areas in the winter storm warning could see up to 3 inches of snow and up to one-third inch of ice.

A winter storm warning will be in effect beginning Friday evening through Saturday afternoon for parts of the northeastern North Carolina and eastern and southeastern Virginia, with heavy snow and a light glaze of ice in the forecast in those areas.

All is on track for the winter storm to impact our area today. Snow should start up this afternoon, with some possible flakes before then. The snow may come down heavily at first

Snow and ice is expected in north Georgia and metro Atlanta by Friday morning with a quick change over to rain and freezing rain for much of the day. Many schools and government offices have already closed ahead of the storm.
