Ireland has joined South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, the International Court of Justice announced Tuesday morning.

Ireland had said it would intervene in the case at the International Court of Justice, arguing that Israel’s actions in Gaza amounted to collective punishment.

The decision comes after Ireland’s November Parliament motion and December Cabinet vote affirmed its stance that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza.

Under ICJ procedures, both South Africa and Israel will now have the opportunity to submit written observations regarding Ireland's intervention as prescribed by Article 83 of the Rules of Court. The court's interpretation of the Genocide Convention in this case will be legally binding on all intervening parties.
