US aviation safety regulators are slowing the rate of aircraft arrivals at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to help ease the strain on air traffic controllers in the aftermath of a deadly midair collision last week.

WASHINGTON — A passenger jet collided Wednesday with an Army helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, prompting a large search-and-rescue operation in the nearby Potomac River.

First responders are searching the Potomac River after an aircraft collided with a military helicopter mid-air Wednesday night near Washington D.C. According to the FAA, a PSA Airlines jet collided in the air with a military helicopter while headed towards Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The FAA told airlines late Wednesday that the reduction from a maximum of 28 to 26 arrivals per hour would reduce risk but also increase average delays from 40 minutes to 50 minut
