President Donald Trump “will do the right thing” and support aid for wildfire-ravaged Southern California, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday during a visit to Washington that includes stops at the White House and Capitol.

The Pacific Coast Highway reopened Monday, nearly a month after it was closed when flames from the deadly Palisades Fire ripped through hillside Los Angeles neighborhoods, destroying properties all the way down to the beach.

The Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, partially reopened on Monday, for the first time since fires tore through neighborhoods, destroying homes and businesses.

Southern California faces an increased wildfire threat that is expected to last through most of 2025. While fire activity across the U.S. was generally low in January, Southern California saw a spike in wildfires due to Santa Ana winds.

"SFG needs your urgent assistance in the form of emergency interim approval of additional rate to help avert a dire situation for our customers and the insurance market in the state of California," State Farm said in a filing to the regulator.

State Farm, the largest home insurer in California, is asking for an emergency rate hike from state regulators as it warns that multibillion-dollar payouts from the Los Angeles wildfires threaten its balance sheet and the broader insurance market.
