Chicago-area residents will wake up to a light blanket of snow Friday morning that could complicate the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service. Snow was forecasted to begin falling between 5:30 and 6 a.

Snow develops after midnight and slows down the morning rush Friday. Accumulating snow lingers until early afternoon Friday. The best timeframe for snow is 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snow totals range from a half-inch in far northwest areas to 3 inches to the southeast into northwest Indiana.

While some areas won't see much snowfall or any at all, a band of lake-effect snow is expected to develop starting Sunday night, possibly dumping several inches of snow in far northeastern Illinois.

The snow will linger through Friday morning and then taper off from the northwest to the southeast in the afternoon. Areas near and especially south/east of I-55 could see as much as one to two inches. Expect impacts to the Friday morning and midday commutes.
