Colombian President Gustavo Petro killed a deal between his state-run oil company and a U.S. counterpart, weeks after backing down to President Trump.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on state oil producer Ecopetrol SA to sell its operations in the US, citing his government’s position against fracking, which he says is destructive to nature and humanity.

Colombian energy company Ecopetrol said on Monday it has reached an agreement to renew its oil joint venture with Occidental Petroleum in the U.S. Permian basin in Texas.

Colombia’s president made a strong and unexpected decision. He ordered Ecopetrol, the country’s government-controlled oil company, to cancel a major deal with a U.S.-owned company, Occidental Petroleum (Oxy).

For 2025, Ecopetrol said its plan for Permian's Midland and Delaware sub-basins include drilling some 91 development wells through estimated investment of $885 million to produce an average of 90,000 boe/d net to Ecopetrol Permian.

Occidental Petroleum deal over environmental concerns, reinforcing his stance against fracking and commitment to clean energy.

Ecopetrol and Oxy plan to extend development in Permian Basin, including 34 wells to be drilled between April 2025 and June 2026, with possibility of future extension.
