One suspect is dead and another is in custody after a U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot in the line of duty in northern Vermont on Monday afternoon, federal authorities confirmed.

David C. Maland was conducting the traffic stop​ on Interstate 91, about 20 miles from the Canadian border when "an exchange of gunfire occurred," FBI said.

COVENTRY, Vt. — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed Monday in northern Vermont south of the Canadian border, authorities said. The agent's death Monday afternoon was confirmed by the FBI and Benjamine Huffman, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in Washington. The injured suspect was taken into custody after the violence on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles (32 km) from the Canadian border, the FBI said in a statement.

Governor Phil Scott identified David Maland as the fallen officer, extending his “heartfelt condolences to Agent Maland’s family, friends, and colleagues."

The famil of Agent David Maland, 44, said his career spanned nine years in the military and 15 in the federal government.
