The DoorDash driver who admitted to fatally shooting a 15-year-old in North Carolina is claiming self-defense and faces a first-degree murder charge.

Boyd’s public defender tried to argue he was under duress because his car was being stolen and the shooting was in self-defense. He said Boyd has no prior convictions and is not a risk to the public. DoorDash was one of four jobs Boyd is currently working.

A DoorDash driver and a man on his way to work were arrested near Fresno early Friday after allegedly racing each other down Highway 41 at 120 mph, the California Highway Patrol said. Officers spotted the two drivers speeding south of the Madera County line and stopped them at Children’s Boulevard,

The driver told police he thought the 15-year-old and another man were armed when he fatally shot the teenager in his car.
