Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that tariffs with the United States are on hold for a month after a conversation with President Donald Trump in which she committed to putting more law enforcement on the U.

President Donald Trump, a proponent of tariffs, insists that they are paid for by foreign countries. In fact, it is importers — American companies — that pay tariffs, and the money goes to the U.S. Treasury.

Mexico and the United States have reached a one-month agreement to stave off tariffs and a trade war, the threat of which sent global markets tumbling early Monday. The tariffs on Mexico were set to go into effect Tuesday.

President Donald Trump said he plans to speak Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum before steep new tariffs on U.S. allies and trading partners are scheduled to take effect early Tuesday.
