The EU underlined that Moldova is already a close partner of the EU. Its Association Agreement with the EU, which also includes the far reaching Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, entered into force in 2016 and has been provisionally applied since 2014.

The EU is Moldova's biggest trade partner, accounting for 53.7% of its total trade in 2023, followed by Ukraine (13.1%) and China (8.1%). Moldova's proportion of trade with Russia has fallen significantly and now represents only 3.7% of Moldova’s total trade.
