Sample NSF Data Management Plans. These examples from UC San Diego proposals are intended to provide a starting point for the development of other proposal-specific Data Management Plans. We thank the UC San Diego investigators who gave permission to include their DMPs in this collection.

The two-page data management and sharing plan is a required part of a proposal to the U.S. National Science Foundation. It describes how a proposal will follow NSF policy on managing, disseminating and sharing research results.

Given that most proposed research involves the generation of scientific data, proposals are subject to the NSF Data Sharing Policy and require submission of a Data Management and Sharing Plan. Data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).

To assist the ENG community in developing effective DMSPs, the five essential components of the DMSP are listed below, along with numerous examples of the types of questions PIs should consider when constructing their proposed DMSPs.
