World Brotherhood Colonies are communities based on an idea envisioned by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Indian-American yogi who authored Autobiography of a Yogi and founded Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) / Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS).

To meet the need of increasing numbers of people inspired by Yogananda’s vision, Ananda’s world brotherhood colonies have expanded to include residential communities in Sacramento, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Portland, OR; Gaston, OR; and Seattle, WA, as well as in Assisi, Italy; Gurgaon, India; and Pune, India.

To strengthen the devotee in his efforts to realize God, Yogananda encouraged people of like mind to join together in what he called “world-brotherhood colonies,” demonstrating by their example “that simplicity of living plus high thinking lead to the greatest happiness.”

Yogananda often predicted that world brotherhood colonies, based on the twin principles of “plain living and high thinking,” would be the social pattern for the future. Kriyananda vowed to do his utmost to make this dream a reality. Below is a list of all the current Ananda communities.

Begun in 1968, Ananda Village was the first of Ananda Sangha’s many World Brotherhood Colonies. It remains the headquarters of the worldwide Ananda Sangha activities, as well as providing homes, livelihoods, and a rich spiritual life for approximately 200 adults and 50 children.

Until his death, Yogananda continued to speak urgently about the need for spiritual cooperative communities - "world brotherhood colonies," as he called them.

Disciples of Yogananda, following in his dream, have founded colonies such as Ananda Village around the world.
